Beginning Golfers On The Golf Course
Essential Golf Etiquette: A Beginner's Guide

Before You Tee Off:

  • Dress Appropriately: Make sure to check the course website or check with your member if you're a guest on what to wear. A clean polo and khaki shorts is always a safe outfit that works on most golf courses in the United States.

  • Check Your Tee Time: Arrive early to ensure you're ready to go when your tee time arrives.

  • Warm Up: Practice your swing on the driving range or putting green to prepare for your round.

  • Understand the Course: Familiarize yourself with the layout, hazards, and local rules.

On the Course:

  • Pace of Play: Keep up with the group ahead of you. If you're falling behind, let the group behind you play through.

  • Repair Divots and Rake Bunkers: Always repair your divots and rake bunkers after hitting. This helps maintain the course's condition.

  • Quiet Please: Be mindful of noise. Avoid loud conversations or shouting while others are hitting.

  • Out of Bounds: If your ball goes out of bounds, return to the previous shot and take a penalty stroke.

  • Lost Ball: If you lose your ball, search for a maximum of five minutes. If you don't find it, return to the previous shot and take a penalty stroke.

  • Cart Rules: 90 degree rules and watch out for the "beep!" when the cart is rolling without the brake in park.

On the Green:

  • Mark Your Ball: If your ball is in the way of another player's putt, mark it and lift it.

  • Repair Pitch Marks: Repair any pitch marks on the green caused by your ball or others.

  • No Spiking on Greens: Avoid walking on the greens with your golf spikes, as they can damage the surface.

  • Quiet Zone: Be quiet when others are putting. Avoid making noise that could distract them.

After Your Round:

  • Return Equipment: Ensure you have all your equipment before leaving the course.

  • Tips for Caddies: If you had a caddie, tip them appropriately for their services.

  • Thank the Staff: Thank the course staff for their work in maintaining the course.
